Der Blick auf die religiöse Welt Indiens stiftet zunächst Verwirrung: Verschiedene Pantheen lösen sich im Laufe der Zeit ab, diverse Erlösungswege können parallel beschritten werden, die Verehrung anthropomorpher Götter und transzendenter Größen sind auswechselbar. Aufgrund dieser Vielfalt wird häufig nicht mehr von "dem" Hinduismus, sondern von Religionen des indischen Subkontinents gesprochen. Deren bedeutendste sollen in chronologischer Reihenfolge (vedische Religion, Brahmanismus, klassischer Hinduismus, Bhakti-Frömmigkeit, Neohinduimus) sowie im zeitlichen Nebeneinander (Vishnuismus, Shivaismus, Shaktismus sowie kurz auch Jainismus, Buddhismus sowie Sikh-Religion) betrachtet werden. Insgesamt eröffnet sich dabei eine gewisse Systematik von Frömmigkeitsformen und Glaubenswegen angesichts der Abwesenheit verbindender Dogmen "des" Hinduismus.
