Schon im frühen Christentum war die künstlerische Ausstattung und die Bebilderung von Altären Gegenstand teilweise erregter theologischer Debatten. Mit dem vermehrten Aufkommen des Retabels seit dem 13. Jahrhundert, einem Aufsatz an der Rückseite der Altarmensa, ist zudem die Genese des modernen Bildes eng verbunden. Von dort aus lassen sich weitere zentrale Stationen des christlichen Bildgebrauchs behandeln: Sie führen von der Wandelfähigkeit nordalpiner Klappaltäre (z.B. Grünewalds Isenheimer Altar) über die Einführung der barocken Hochformate in der Gegenreformation bis hin zu neuen Bildkonzepten wie Caspar David Friedrichs Tetschener Altar. Die bis heute nachwirkende auratische Macht der Bilder und der damit verbundene Glaube an ihre Evidenz und Aussagekraft lässt sich zu einem Großteil aus der Entstehung des Tafelbildes in seinem kultischen Gebrauch erklären. Das Seminar zeichnet zentrale Stationen dieses bildgeschichtlichen Wandels nach.
