Das Forschungsmodul erlaubt den Studierenden einen ersten Einblick in das Forschungsumfeld und führt zu einer zunehmend eigenständigeren Bearbeitung eines Themas. Das Praktikum wird nicht mehr in Praktikumsräumen sondern im Forschungslabor durchgeführt. Jeder Student/in bekommt ein eigenes Thema zur Bearbeitung und wird entsprechend individuell betreut. Versuchs-, Zeit- und Resourcen-Planung bilden einen wesentlichen Teil des Kompetenzerwerbs. Die Teilnehmer lernen weiterhin selbstständig zu entscheiden ob erhobene Daten ausreichend sind und wie diese in biologische Modelle eingebaut werden können. Die eigenständige Literatursuche ergänzt dies.
