Gender is an often taken for granted organizing principle of society, shaping social structures, cultural understandings, processes of interaction, and identities. This course explores sociological theories on gender starting with classic texts on gender in interactions and the concept of “doing gender”. We will proceed with studies on gender at work and conclude with the topic of sexuality and intersectional approaches that include race, class, and gender as well.
This course is part of the “international track” and therefore will be taught in English. It is both for students who speak/read/write in English regularly and for those who do not (yet). Students are invited to participate in this course not only to learn more about theory, but to practice and improve their language skills to become more fluent in English.
This course will start via distance-learning. This means that we will meet online via Zoom for the introductory meeting and for the first block date in May. However, you will not spend the whole seminar in a web conference: The course will take place in synchronous (live meetings online) and asynchronous formats (tasks for writing/reading that you can do on your own) as well.
Please make sure you will be able to attend the (online)meetings on the dates as announced in ekvv. To participate it is necessary to read and prepare the essential literature previous to the meetings.

Geschlechterforschung in der Lehre |
Study requirements (Studienleistung) include:
• reading and preparing the essential literature
• taking an active part in the discussions as well as in tasks at LernraumPlus.
• give an input in form of a short verbal presentation (5-10 minutes max, a handout (“Thesenpapier”) is optional - no PowerPoint please).
There are three different types of inputs: a) an introduction to the author and their work based on individual research, b) a summary of a perception of the text, or c) an expertise for the text that facilitates the discussion (preparing questions that structure the discussion based on the key findings and arguments of the text). Students will be assigned to the topics at the introductory meeting.
Examinations can be taken as a term paper (Hausarbeit) of 20-30 pages, submitted in German or in English. In a paper students discuss a research question related to the course by addressing at least one of the texts from the essential literature.
It is required to hand in an exposé or so called “Six-liner” beforehand and to meet at least once for feedback in my consultation-hour. For more info on writing an exposé (English or German) see: www.uni-bielefeld.de/soz/ab3/wissenschaftlich-arbeiten/sechszeiler-expose.html
