Migration und Transformation of European Borderlands

Scientific semantics, such as ‘borderless Europe’ and ‘cosmopolitan Europe’ suggest a formation of a new European social space, which can not be reduced to particular national societies. This course takes the mentioned semantics as a starting point to analyze geographic mobility, formation of borders and socio-structural change in Europe. The course consists of three particular parts, such as 1) Cross-border mobility and migration, 2) Borders of Europe, and 3) Europeanization as a socio-structural and discoursive Transformation. It combines interdisciplinary perspectives to address a timely topic.

The particular sessions are structured as the following:

I Part: Cross-Border Mobility and Migration

1. Introduction.

2. Transformation of Migration Dynamics in Europe: Current Debates

3. Mobile Elites in Europe?
4. Gendering Migration: A European Dimension?
5. Europeanization of Migration Politics: Questions and Controversies

II Production of Borders and Borderlands

6. Borders of Europe: Concepts and Descriptions

7. Europe as a Borderland: Questioning the Essentialist View of Europe
