230594 Language Learning Motivation and Individual Learner Differences (S) (SoSe 2008)

Contents, comment

In this course we will explore general theories of motivation which are relevant to foreign language learning as well as current frameworks of L2 motivation.

In particular, we will consider what motivation consists of, the influence it has on learning, and the extent to which learner motivation can be influenced by the teacher. We will take a dynamic view of motivation, distinguishing between initial motivation and maintaining motivation over longer periods of time. This includes considering how teachers can work with learners to ensure that motivation continues over time. In this context, attention will be given to grouping practice, feedback, praise, and teacher expectations. Finally, we will link language learning motivation to the issue of learner autonomy and self-motivation, which includes the use of learner strategies.

Throughout the course attention will be drawn to individual variation among learners concerning motivation and the learner variables involved. Relevant psychological differences among learners will be considered.

Participants are invited to give presentations.
