270250 Measuring the soul: The psychophysical journey (S) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

IMPORTANT: THIS SEMINAR WILL TAKE PLACE ONLINE (VIA ZOOM)

Psychophysics arose from the desire for understanding how the world of the human soul is related to the world of physics. Based on a foundation laid by Fechner's (1860) Elements of Psychophysics, a research field emerged that is highly active still and that strives to answer core questions of our existence. At the core of this research field is the development of methods that measure otherwise hard to assess aspects of "the soul", so that these aspects can be studied psychologically. In this seminar, 1) we trace the history of psychophysics up to the present, 2) we acquire a basic toolkit of psychophysical methods, and 3) use these methods to creatively and playfully design new experiments and research endeavors. In this way, we deepen our understanding of human perception (complementary to the perception lecture, "Wahrnehmungsvorlesung") and obtain core skills for the practical parts of the Psychology BSc, such as the "Empra" and the BSc thesis.
