Wenn wir jemandem ein Versprechen geben, dann bringen wir allem Anschein nach durch einen Sprechakt eine moralische Pflicht hervor, die es vorher nicht gab. Dieses Phänomen wirft eine Reihe von interessanten philosophischen Fragen auf: Was heißt es eigentlich genau, ein Versprechen zu geben? Können wir wirklich durch einen Sprechakt eine Verpflichtung in die Welt bringen? Unter welchen Bedingungen sind Versprechen gültig? Gibt es Handlungen, die man nicht versprechen kann oder darf? Diese und weitere Fragen werden wir anhand von historischen und zeitgenössischen philosophischen Beiträgen zum Thema im Seminar diskutieren. Da der Großteil der Textgrundlagen des Seminars nicht in deutscher Übersetzung vorliegt, wird die Bereitschaft und Fähigkeit vorausgesetzt, philosophische Fachtexte auf Englisch zu lesen.
