230174 Advanced Writing and Translation (S) (WiSe 2004/2005)

Short comment

Contents, comment

This course is in preparation for the Klausur required in Hauptstudium for students who began their studies before WS 2003-4. It is intended to develop your ability to express yourself at a level adequate for postgraduate studies in English. It will increase the range and flexibility of your vocabulary and your sensitivity to stylistic nuances. The emphasis will be on effective, appropriate communication through argument, reflection and logical development in the genre of the personal essay, broadly defined. Every second week, you will prepare a translation from German to English. This will be corrected and discussed the following week. Then you will write an essay developing themes that arise from the translation text for evaluation in the subsequent week. Thus topics will change every two weeks and provide scope for a variety of interests and relevance to current developments.
