"Sprachinseln sind räumlich abgrenzbare und intern strukturierte Siedlungsräume einer sprachlichen Minderheit inmitten einer anderssprachigen Mehrheit" (Hutterer 1982), die durch Einwanderung entstanden sind, keine direkte topographische Verbindung zu ihrem sprachlichen Mutterland unterhalten und deren Bewohner sich durch eine "verzögerte sprachliche und kulturelle Assimilation" (vgl. Mattheier 1994) an die umgebende Mehrheitsgesellschaft auszeichnen.

In dem Seminar stehen deutschsprachige Sprachinseln in Nord- und Südamerika sowie in Ost- und Südeuropa im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Neben historischen Fragestellungen, in welchen es zuvörderst um die Entstehung, aber ggf. auch um die Auflösung der betroffene Sprachinseln geht, werden zuvörderst Probleme des Sprachkontaktes, der Sprachkonstanz und des Sprachverfalls zu behandeln sein.
