Aus laientheoretischer Perspektive stellen sich natürliche Sprachen meist als wesentlich homogener dar, als sie dies in Wirklichkeit sind. De facto besteht jede Sprache aus einem Bündel von Varietäten, von denen die Standardvarietät lediglich eine unter vielen darstellt. Generell lassen sich sprachliche Varietäten nach diatopischen, diastratischen, funktionalen und medialen Gesichtspunkten - also nach Dialekten, Soziolekten, Funktiolekten (z.B. Fachsprachen) und Mediolekten - unterscheiden, wobei es nicht selten zu Überschneidungen kommt. Soweit es das deutsche Sprachgebiet betrifft, sollen all diese Varietäten in der Lehrveranstaltung exemplarisch zur Sprache kommen.
