996006 Academic English: Academic Writing (S) (WiSe 2010/2011)

Contents, comment

This course will give practical and theoretical help in writing scholarly texts in English.
Its main purpose is to make students more aware of how to construct a coherent argument, of how to decide what is important and what is not, how to write well-rounded paragraphs and how to link your sentences, paragraphs and sections so that they express your ideas clearly and succinctly.

The class is meant for all those PhD students of the BGHS who are currently working on academic texts in English, whether these are scholarly articles, posters, theses, thesis or grant proposals, or letters of application or invitation. Class work will start with three introductory units supplied by the course instructor. After that, participants are expected to produce 2 pieces each of English text of their own for discussion in class.
