230206 Poetry Now! (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Contents, comment

Students tend to either love or avoid poetry. Most shun away from in-depth poetry analysis, preferring an emotional an subjective approach that leaves aside the author's craft that has gone into the making of the poem. This seminar is directed at poetry lovers and the poetry-anxious alike. (It may even convert some of the poetry-indifferent.) We will analyse and interpret a set of classical British poems in detail, but without much preparation. Rather, in this workshop-style seminar, we will do the contextual research as we go along, in the very session in which you are confronted with the poem. This will require time (hence the double-session format), ingenuity (which is bound to be there, if YOU come, too), and research tools. Students are therefore encouraged to bring their laptops/tablet computers to class.
