230275 British Modernism (S) (WiSe 2005/2006)

Contents, comment

The first three decades of the twentieth century witnessed radical changes in all the arts, as well as major developments in the sciences and politics, which had a lasting influence on many areas of social and cultural life in the modern world. In this course, we will read novels, short stories and poems written by major modernist British authors and explore their innovations in themes, style and technique. We will also inquire into the connections between these innovations in literature on the one hand and in the arts - such painting, sculpture and music - on the other.

Einzelleistung: Oral presentation in class and term paper.

Texts:

The Short stories and poems will be provided in a reader at the beginning of the semester. In addition, please buy

  • James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916)
  • Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse (1927)

Students are strongly advised to start reading at least one of the novels before the course starts.
