This seminar will introduce first-year students to the basics of British literary studies - the tools of the trade, as it were. Participants will be taught the terms and methods of analysis and interpretation of texts in the three main literary genres, poetry, drama and narrative.
Students are strongly urged to make time for the tutorial, which offers support in the organization of studies and provides an introduction to strategies of research and the formal requirements of academic work, as well as a repetition of material presented in class.
Shakespeare, William. King Richard II. (please note: you MUST buy an annotated, scholarly edition, i.e. one from either of these three series: The Arden Shakespeare, New Cambridge Shakespeare, or The Oxford Shakespeare)
Nünning, Vera, and Ansgar Nünning. An Introduction to the Study of English and American Literature. Stuttgart: Klett, 2004.
Please purchase a copy of both books. A reader containing further literary texts will be made available in the first session.
