230527 Analysing and Interpreting Literary Texts (V) (SoSe 2007)

Contents, comment

This lecture-style course will introduce first-year students to the basics of literary studies - the tools of the trade, as it were. Participants will be taught the terms and methods of analysis and interpretation of texts in the three main literary genres, poetry, drama and narrative. We will also discuss different theoretical approaches to the study of literature. A tutorial which is obligatory for all participants in the course will offer support in the organization of studies, and provide an introduction to strategies of research and the formal requirements of academic work, as well as a repetition of material presented in class.

Text: The course book will be Vera Nünning and Ansgar Nünning An Introduction to the Study of English and American Literature. Stuttgart: Klett, 2004. Please buy a copy of this book. Other material (extracts from literary texts) will be made available in the course.

Please note that you can only register for this course in combination with one of the "Survey of British Literature" courses.
