South Africa is a country that has been indelibly changed by its colonial history. In the 20th century, colonial rule morphed into “Apartheid,” a political system of brutal racial segregation and oppression. The writing of J.M. Coetzee is mainly concerned with understanding this history from the perspectives of both the oppressed and the oppressor. In this seminar we will use two of his novels and other secondary sources to examine the relationship between trauma and writing, as well as the role of the novel in colonial and postcolonial contexts. Please note that although several live online lessons will be offered in the regular class hours, it is possible to participate in this course and gain credit through asynchronous learning, provided that you meet the Studienleistung requirements.
