1891 stellt der Feuilletonist Friedrich Michael Fels eine Diagnose seiner Zeit, die das Gefühl eines kulturellen und sozialen Umbruchs um 1900 zu fassen sucht: „Wir stehen an der Grenzscheide zweier Welten; was wir schaffen, ist nur Vorbereitung auf ein künftiges Großes, das wir nicht kennen, kaum ahnen.“ Auch die dramatischen Texte der Epoche reflektieren eine janusköpfige Zeit - zwischen Kontinuität und Aufbruch, Fortschritt und Skepsis, dramatischer Tradition und theatraler Erneuerung. Im Seminar lesen wir Texte von Arno Holz und Johannes Schlaf, Franz Wedekind, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Arthur Schnitzler, Gerhart Hauptmann und Georg Kaiser. Es handelt sich bei dem Seminar um einen Lektürekurs. Eine hohe Lesebereitschaft ist also Teilnahmevoraussetzung.
