Starting in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and looking at a number of Disney princesses and how their behaviour has changed over time, in this student-led Study Group, we will address the question of whether there is stagnation in terms of stereotypical, gender-specific behaviour of Disney protagonists - or do the gender roles in fact change over time? And: What makes the Disney princesses feminine?
These are possible questions we could answer with the help of various theoretical frameworks (drawing, for example, on Tyson or Butler). Apart from working our way into the theory and developing our theoretical toolkit together, we would also decide together on which princesses (and princes) we want to have a closer look at.
As this is a student-led study group and not a seminar, all the participants can and should help to shape the programme we will follow, and everyone will be expected to contribute by for example doing research, suggesting material, leading sessions, writing minutes of the sessions and participating actively in the discussions.
