This seminar offers an introduction to the development of the English language. We will cover the different periods of the English language (such as Old English, Middle English, Modern English) and will look at the main characteristics of each period as well as the socio-cultural background involved, situations of contact with other languages, and change in the English language. Sample texts from each of the periods and geographic areas will be used to make the work more concrete. We will establish links between the present and the past as often as possible to add a new perspective to our view of Present Day English. At the end of this seminar, you will be able to trace and date important phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic changes.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
