Romeo and Juliet is one of the most often adapted plays by Shakespeare. For our seminar, we will discuss its value in the literary syllabus taught at school, both in its ‘original’ form as play text and in various media renditions, such as theatre, movie (both as costume drama and modernisation), graphic novel/comic, and song. This brings us to questions about the nature of adaptations, and what makes them attractive or difficult in a EFL classroom, including such key decision as whether to teach R&J in Sek I or to confine it to Sek II? In the course of this class, you will particularly discuss, rehearse and compare different methodical approaches to drama and theatre, and consider possible ways to plan and organize thematic units and individual classroom sessions.
