In this class we will look at different types of speech impediments, such as aphasia, dysarthria, and how they function linguistically. We will look at how language is produced and perceived, the anatomy of the brain and where language is located, and the types of diseases and deficits that can lead to aphasia and dysarthria and their accompanying problems.

Goals
The main aims of this class are to enable students to understand the principles of aphasias and dysarthrias. The students will be familiar with the leading diagnostic means and therapeutical measures in aphasia therapy.

After successful completion of this class, students will know about

  • the general structure of the brain
  • the mechanisms of speech production and perception
  • the leading causes for aphasia and dysarthria
  • the main types of aphasia
  • the main types of dysarthria
  • the linguistic deficits seen in speech disabilities
  • the most common diagnostics and therapeutical measures

Credit
Credit for this class can be gained on the basis of regular attendance, in-class project work and a final written exam.
