Transnational and global history constitute two broad, diverse, and mutually related research fields. This class will focus on a variety of tools available to historians whose approach extends beyond the scope of a western or nation-state centered perspective. Particular attention will be drawn to core analytical categories as well as to the theoretical and historiographical backgrounds from which they emerged during the past decades. The first part of the seminar will focus on the epistemic foundations of transnational and global history. The second part will individually address the most frequently applied analytical categories with particular emphasis on their empirical application in both transnational and global perspectives.
The seminar builds on an explicit interactional dynamic and will take place weekly and online via Zoom. An e-mail containing all information required for participation will be sent out in the week preceding the start of term. All literature assigned will be in English. Nevertheless, every participant is encouraged to individually expand the syllabus through specific materials according to her/his interests and other language skills.
