241240 Word Maps over Groups (S) (SoSe 2014)

Contents, comment

The idea of this seminar series is to work through the text ‘Words: Notes on Verbal Width in Groups’ by Dan Segal. We will introduce word maps and the notion of verbal width over groups as well as some other basic concepts. We will see a number of results over various classes of groups. If time permits we will discuss some applications of word maps over profinite, algebraic and p-adic analytic groups. Knowledge of group theory is a prerequisite. For the more advanced topics some knowledge of profinite, algebraic and analytic groups would be useful though the expository style of the text should make these topics accessible to non-experts.
