In this class, we will familiarize ourselves with recent research in the areas of sociophonetics and sociophonology. Building on this prior work, we will formulate new research questions and try to answer them based on quantitative analyses of the production, perception or emergence of phonetic varieties.

The class will cover both theoretical and hands-on aspects of sociophonetics (and sociophonology) and demands a high level of initiative from the participants, the ability to work on individual research projects within small groups in and out of the seminar times as well as the readiness to acquire new methodological skills and do research independently.
