This lecture-style course will introduce students to the history of British literature from the Middle Ages until today. We will survey the major authors and influential works from the various epochs of literary history, and we will trace the developments of drama, poetry and prose fiction. A special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between literature and the contexts of social, political, ideological and economic history. Photocopies of the texts we will have a closer look at will be provided in the individual sessions (or made accessible via StudIP).
Students are nevertheless advised to purchase the Norton Anthology of English Literature (two volumes) - a good investment in your whole course of studies (and beyond) - from which many texts will be taken.
Photocopies of the texts we will have a closer look at will be provided in the individual sessions (or made accessible via StudIP).
