Wohlgeformte Diskurse zeichnen sich unter anderem dadurch aus, dass sie kohärent sind: Die einzelnen Sätze oder Äußerungen eines Diskurses sind nicht zufällig aneinandergereiht, sondern inhaltlich aufeinander zu beziehen. So werden die Sätze im Minitext "Peter erschrak. Maria stand plötzlich vor ihm" nicht als isoliert zu betrachtende Sachverhalte verstanden, sondern bevorzugt als Effekt und Ursache einer kausalen (Diskurs)-Relation identifiziert: "Peter erschrak, WEIL Maria plötzlich vor ihm stand". Für die zugrunde liegenden Schlussfolgerungsprozesse spielen sowohl sprachliche Mittel als auch Weltwissen eine wesentliche Rolle.
Im Seminar werden zentrale Aspekte der Diskurskohärenz wie Diskursrelationen/rhetorische Relationen und anaphorische Referenz sowohl aus theoretisch-linguistischer als auch aus psycholinguistischer Perspektive behandelt. Dabei wird zu Theorien und Modellen der Struktur und (kognitiven) Repräsentation von Diskursen vereinzelt auch auf wichtige methodische Instrumente zur Untersuchung von Diskurskohärenz und ihrer Verarbeitung einzugehen sein.
