Short Bio:
Welcome to my page! My name is Anne Engelhardt, and I have been a researcher in the Koddenbrock Research Group / International Relations and Political Economy since April 2026. My research interests include theories of international political economy with a focus on North-South relations, the sociology of work, health and safety, and working conditions, labour and legal geography, spatialised colonial relations and the racialised and gendered division of labour, conflicts surrounding peace policy, theories of social reproduction, body politics and gender relations, social movements and (transnational) trade unions, as well as critical logistics and infrastructure research.

At present, I am primarily working on my Habilitation project entitled ‘Global Steel Supply Chains in times of militarisation: Intersecting rhythms of bodies, regulations, and conflicts’, with a focus on steel production for the maritime transport sector.

Current research topics

🚢 Maritime Work, Militarisation & Migration

I’m really looking forward to taking part in this year’s LABOR.A on 15 September 2026 in Berlin! The programme is now online, and there are lots of great, pressing topics and discussions planned! The overarching theme is ‘Human’. And where could this theme be more important than in global maritime transport, at ports and on ships, where port workers and seafarers are often marginalised as collateral damage of new migration agreements, military conflicts and (opening and closing) naval blockades?

“Around 90 per cent of all goods worldwide are transported by sea. Consequently, virtually every global socio-political and economic conflict also has an impact on work within maritime infrastructures. Workers such as seafarers and dockers are directly affected by ‘shadow fleets’, pandemics, military conflicts and changing migration regimes. They are often overlooked or even devalued and dehumanised. How can this be changed?”

I look forward to discussing this with you, along with Matthias Ristau, Chair of the German Seamen’s Mission; ITF Inspector Sören Wichmann (ver.di); and Lars Stubbe, ver.di Secretary for the Maritime Economy and Aviation (ver.di). Together with Janina Puder and Jule Westernheide, we will lead the discussion and put a human face on the maritime component of many supply chains, sharing the stories of those involved.
