Prof. Dr. Claudia Bettina Maier

Prof. Dr. Claudia B. Maier is Professor of Nursing Science and Health Services Research at the School of Public Health at Bielefeld University. She will also become Director of the Institute for Nursing Science (IPW), an affiliated institute of Bielefeld University since 1995.

Claudia Maier is Senior Fellow of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing, USA; and Senior Fellow of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, Belgium. She is deputy editor of the journal Human Resources for Health. Maier also consults regularly for the WHO Regional Office for Europe on topics related to nursing and Advanced Nursing Practice.

From 2015 to 2023, Maier was research fellow at the Technische Universität Berlin, including research group leader from 2021 to 2023 (e.g. BSN4Hospital, EU-Magnet4Europe Study). From 2014-2015, Maier spent a research year with Prof. Linda H. Aiken at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, as Harkness Fellow (Commonwealth Fund/ B. Braun Foundation). Previously, from 2011-2014, Maier worked at the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) on health system and HRH strengthening, HIV/AIDS programme integration and skill-mix. From 2008-2011 she worked at the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and from 2007-2008 at the Directorate General Sanco (Santé) in Brussels. Previous work included Bielefeld University and the WHO in Geneva.

Claudia Maier has been member of various expert groups and advisory boards, including the Concerted Action Nursing (Konzertierte Aktion Pflege): member of the expert group on interprofessional collaboration (2020-2022), in the advisory board of the project "restart" of the German health system (Projekt Neustart!) of the Robert Bosch Foundation (2019-2021), und member of the advisory board of the Center for Healthcare Delivery Research and Innovation (HDRI), School of Nursing, an der Columbia University, New York, USA (since September 2023).
