Linguistics and literary studies, sociology, Educational Science and technology: as a student on the Master's degree programme in Interdisciplinary Media Studies, you will look at media from four academic disciplines, but also produce them yourself in practical media seminars. The special feature of the Master's degree programme lies in the integration of humanities and social science skills and image processing and Text Technology. The degree programme thus combines the diverse media science expertise and potential of Bielefeld University and covers the subject area of 'Media and Communication' in its entire breadth.
The current developments in the various fields of work and professions in media-related industries are leading to a high demand for media education and digital skills. This includes both skills and knowledge in the commissioning and operation of the respective offline and online media as well as the systematic, critical and responsible reflection of the respective content and services.
The degree programme can be completed with a Master of Arts or Master of Science and thus offers optimal opportunities for individual profile development. In addition to the areas of press and broadcasting, possible professional fields for graduates of the Master's degree programme in Interdisciplinary Media Studies include publishing houses, production companies in the field of new media, public relations, advertising, online communication, regional media policy and education as well as cultural and media management and others. Due to the research-oriented focus, graduates of the degree programme also have excellent prerequisites for a doctorate

Studies can be commenced in both winter and summer semesters. Courses are targeted to commencing studies in winter semester. Student counselling to plan the course of studies is recommended.
The standard period of studies is 4 semesters.
The studies Interdisciplinary Media Studies comprise 120 credit points.
Access to the Master programme is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters, qualifies for exercising a profession and is in accordance with the subject-specific regulations.

Degrees from accredited Bachelor programmes at German ‘Berufsakademien’ are equivalent to Bachelor degrees from universities.
Applicants with a university degree obtained abroad are granted access provided that the degree they have acquired is deemed sufficient for this purpose and they can provide evidence of the required language skills.

The study places for this degree programme are not subject to any admission restrictions (numerus clausus). Nevertheless, you need to apply within the currently applicable application deadlines.
As soon as you receive a positive response in the application and status portal (notice of access from the faculty), you can submit your application for enrolment within the set deadline. If you are already enrolled at Bielefeld University, you need to apply for a change of degree programme.
