Die inhaltlichen Forschungsschwerpunkte der Abteilung Theologie liegen auf folgenden Themengebieten:
Das Alte und das Neue Testament über eine wissenschaftlich verantwortete Auslegung („Exegese“) immer wieder neu zu erschließen und zu verstehen, ist die Aufgabe der Biblischen Theologie.
Angewiesen auf Methoden der historischen Wissenschaften, werden in dieser Disziplin zentrale Problemstellungen unter theologischen Aspekten rekonstruiert und interpretiert. In Längsschnitten wird der Versuch gemacht, rote Fäden durch die Epochen zu entdecken und nachzuzeichnen. Traditionell wird die Kirchengeschichte in Alte Kirche, Mittelalter, Reformation und Neuzeit eingeteilt.
Die Systematische Theologie ist diejenige theologische Disziplin, die sich damit befasst, die christliche Lehre in geordneter („systematischer“), argumentativ nachvollziehbarer Weise darzustellen und in Auseinandersetzung mit den Fragen der Gegenwart immer wieder neu zu reflektieren. Sie hat also die Aufgabe, den christlichen Glauben zu durchdenken und aufzuzeigen, welche existenzielle Wahrheit er auch heute noch hat – „fides quaerens intellectum“ (A. v. Canterbury): Der Glaube sucht den Verstand; er will verstanden werden.
In der Religionspädagogik geht es um die Reflexion und die praktische Gestaltung religiöser Bildungsprozesse, um die religiöse Entwicklung von Schülerinnen und Schülern pädagogisch kompetent zu begleiten und sie dazu zu befähigen, über religiöse Fragen reflektieren und eigene Standpunkte einnehmen zu können. Um dabei selbst Erfahrungen mit der Gestaltung von Religionsunterricht zu sammeln werden im Rahmen der religionspädagogischen Lehrveranstaltungen auch Praxisstudien in den verschiedenen Schultypen durchgeführt.
In dieser Fachdisziplin stehen alle konkreten Religionen, sowie religiöse Weltanschauungen und Phänomene der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart im Vordergrund. Ihre Erforschung wird vornehmlich durch die Subdisziplinen Religionsgeschichte, Religionssoziologie, Religionspsychologie und Religionsethologie durchgeführt.

Studies can be commenced in both winter and summer semesters. Courses are targeted to commencing studies in winter semester. Student counselling to plan the course of studies is recommended.
The standard period of studies is 6 semesters.

The study places are not subject to any admission restrictions (numerus clausus). Nevertheless, you need to apply within the currently applicable application deadlines. Afterwards, however, you can submit your application for enrolment directly in the application and status portal, provided that you meet the access requirements. If you are already enrolled at Bielefeld University, you need to apply for a change of degree programme.
