Die Studierenden können ein durch eine spezifische Fragestellung definiertes aktuelles Forschungsgebiet selbstständig (i.d.R. experimentell) angehen und dieses in einer den Standards wissenschaftlichen Publizierens entsprechenden Form darstellen. Sie besitzen die Befähigung zur selbstständigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit und können die im Studiengang erworbenen fachlichen und methodischen Kenntnisse anwenden.
Students are able to independently work on a specific (as a rule: empiric) research question and to present it in an adequate form according to the requirements of scientific publications. They are able to work scientifically and to implement the skills and knowledge gained through the course of their studies.
Aus den aktuellen Forschungsgebieten der den Studiengang tragenden Bereiche wird den Studierenden ein i.d.R. experimentell zu bearbeitendes Thema zur Ökologie vergeben. In Absprache mit einer/m Dozentin/en der den Studiengang tragenden Bereiche kann die Masterarbeit auch in einem anderen Bereich oder außeruniversitär angefertigt werden. Es ist eine Masterarbeit anzufertigen, die den themenspezifischen Kenntnisstand zu Beginn der Arbeit, die Fragestellungen und Hypothesen, die verwendeten Materialien und Methoden, die erzielten Ergebnisse sowie deren kritische Einordnung in die Literatur wiedergibt.
Darüber hinaus werden die Ergebnisse in einem der Masterarbeit zugeordneten Seminar vorgetragen und anschließend diskutiert.
Students work on a (as a rule: empiric) ecological research question provided by one of the departments involved in the the Master programme. In accordance with one of the lecturers of the programme, the thesis may also be written in the context of another department or another institution.
The thesis comprises a presentation of the state of the art of the specific field, the questions and hypotheses, the materials and methods and the results of the student's project and the critical reflection of the results based on relevant literature.
Moreover, the results are presented and discussed during a talk in a seminar.

Das Format der Masterarbeit orientiert sich am Format einer wissenschaftlichen Publikation. Formale Aspekte (Anzahl Wörter, Layout) sind mit der/dem Betreuer*in abzusprechen. Das Projekt muss so gewählt sein, dass der vorgesehene Workload von 30 LP (900 Stunden) eingehalten wird. Die Arbeit ist vor Beginn im Prüfungsamt anzumelden. Die Zeit zur Bearbeitung beträgt 6 Monate. Die Arbeit muss fristgerecht in dreifacher gebundener Ausfertigung im Prüfungsamt eingereicht werden. Gruppenarbeiten sind nicht möglich.
Weitere Bestimmungen ergeben sich aus der MPO.
The thesis should be presented like a scientific publication. Formal aspects (word count, layout) have to be agreed upon with the supervisor. Project and research question have to fulfil the requirement encompassing no more than the workload of 30 LP (900 hours). The begin of the project has to be registered at the examination office prior to the start of the project. The time for completion of the thesis is six months. The thesis has to be handed in in three bound copies prior to the end of the deadline.
It is not possible to work on a thesis as a group.
