Medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, molecular biology - genome data are playing an increasingly important role in many areas. In order to be able to analyze and "read" this data, experts are needed who can evaluate and process very large amounts of data using bioinformatics and statistics and have a good understanding of genome biology as well. The results serve, for example, as a basis for diagnoses and therapies, for controlling biotechnological processes or for developing new plant varieties. The interdisciplinary degree course "Bioinformatic Genome Research" integrates bioinformatics and genome biology. It teaches the application-oriented skills needed to work in the field of "analysis of high-throughput data in the life sciences". Bielefeld University is strong in research in both bioinformatics and genome biology. The Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Engineering as well as joint institutions such as the "Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec)" offer very good working conditions at the cutting edge of technology. In basic and specialization modules, students are given a structured foundation in the subject so that they can increasingly carry out their own research projects independently in project modules up to the Bachelor's thesis. Students gain insights into innovative research and can participate in actual research of working groups. There is a great deal of freedom of choice for supplementary courses and individual profiles that can be pursued.
A mobility window allows students to gain experience abroad or at other universities. The course prepares students for a consecutive Master's degree and possibly a doctorate, but also creates the prerequisites for initial employment in molecular biology, biotechnology or medical fields with authorities, associations and in industry.

Access requirements

Access to the Bachelor programme is granted to those who have a university entrance qualification suitable for Germany (e. g. German ‘Abitur’).

Special conditions apply to applicants with a foreign certificate of education.

Likewise, special conditions apply to those qualified in vocational education and training.

Application, admission and enrolment  1

The study places are subject to admission restrictions (numerus clausus). You need to register online with the German Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Foundation for University Admission) (hochschulstart.de) and then apply to Bielefeld University within the currently applicable application deadlines.

Places are allocated in the so-called German ‘Dialogorientiertes Serviceverfahren (DoSV)’ (dialogue-oriented service procedure) and is carried out in several steps. You can find more detailed information and important tips on the dialogue-oriented service procedure on the pages of the Student Office. If you accept an admission offer during this procedure, you can submit your application for enrolment within the set deadline. If you are already enrolled at Bielefeld University, you need to apply for a change of degree programme. After the deadline expires, your admission will be invalid.

You can find more detailed information on the application process as well as information on the enrolment procedure on the pages of the Student Office.
