Stephan Hammer's expertise lies in the field of organic chemistry and enzyme catalysis, in particular in the design and evolution of new biocatalysts for application in synthetic chemistry. The methods used range from bioinformatic analyses and molecular biology techniques to protein biochemical studies and preparative applications in synthesis. Specific current topics include the development of new enzyme functions for sought-after C-C, C-N and C-O bond formations. Applications of these new enzymes range from use in synthesis to the expansion of metabolism in living organisms.
