Die Unterrichtswirklichkeit an den deutschen Schulen scheint dringend reformbedürftig zu sein. Umfangreiche, breit angelegte Argumentationsstränge aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Fachdisziplinen legen eine andere als die gegenwärtig von frontaler Unterweisungs- und Belehrungsdidaktik dominierte Lernkultur nahe, die sich zusammenfassend als "schüleraktiv" bezeichnen lässt. Dessen Perspektivziel liegt im Aufbau des "selbstregulierten" Lernens, das situations- und bedürfnisorientiert durch Phasen des instruktionellen Lernens ergänzt werden kann. Grundlegend soll ein verändertes Unterrichtsverständnis entwickelt werden. Dessen Kernelemente sind in einer Umdefinition der Lehrer- und Schülerrolle, der Vermittlung des Selbstständigkeitsansatzes und des darauf zu beziehenden Praxismodells einer veränderten Lernkultur zu sehen.
