This interdisciplinary research oriented master course is addressed to international students coming either from theoretical physics who have a strong interest in mathematics or from mathematics with a strong interest in physical applications. The students will participate in modules from both faculties and will be guided towards modern questions and methodology in mathematics, mathematical and theoretical physics. The programme offered is organised jointly through the faculties of physics and mathematics.
Starting from a solid knowledge in the foundations of theoretical physics and mathematics they will acquire advanced tools, that will enable them to do independent and methodological research. It is our goal to lead the students to understand and to contribute to state of the art research in at least one area of theoretical physics, mathematics or their intersection. The faculties of physics and mathematics offer several partially overlapping key areas for that purpose.
This curriculum shall enable the students to understand the mathematically precise formulation and the physical relevance of scientific work of partly interdisciplinary nature, to assess it critically and to present its content in a comprehensive way. The master degree shall enable the graduates to a PhD in theoretical physics or mathematics. Bielefeld University offers an interdisciplinary graduate programme to that respect. Furthermore the degree allows for one of the many possible careers outside academia that are open to these disciplines.

Access requirements
Access to the Master programme is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters, qualifies for exercising a profession and is in accordance with the subject-specific regulations.

Degrees from accredited Bachelor programmes at German ‘Berufsakademien’ are equivalent to Bachelor degrees from universities.
Applicants with a university degree obtained abroad are granted access provided that the degree they have acquired is deemed sufficient for this purpose and they can provide evidence of the required language skills.

The study places for this degree programme are not subject to any admission restrictions (numerus clausus). Nevertheless, you need to apply within the currently applicable application deadlines.
As soon as you receive a positive response in the application and status portal (notice of access from the faculty), you can submit your application for enrolment within the set deadline. If you are already enrolled at Bielefeld University, you need to apply for a change of degree programme.
