Chemistry as a Major Subject comprises the theoretical and practical basis of the Bachelor with One Core Subject degree programme, which is, however, followed by an elective area of smaller scope with in-depth modules. Students can choose between different profiles (Physical Chemistry, Synthesis and Theoretical Chemistry).

Students acquire basic knowledge in the core chemical subjects Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. In chemical laboratory practicals, they learn to work practically and to handle chemicals safely. They are taught basic knowledge of safety and environmental issues. They acquire chemical methodological competence in their special field according to the chosen profile and are able to apply this to other contexts. This should enable them to develop, interpret and evaluate relevant scientific and technical data.

The Major Subject Chemistry requires a careful choice of the minor subject with regard to a concrete career perspective, which is why student counselling in advance is strongly recommended. There is the possibility of broadening the study programme by choosing another STEM minor subject with a broader mathematical-scientific focus. In addition to further qualification by taking up a Master's degree programme ˗ usually in the field of the major subject ˗, graduates of the combined Bachelor's degree programme also have the opportunity to aim for non-classical occupational fields. Depending on the combination variant, jobs in small and medium-sized companies in the chemical industry and related areas with a broader range of tasks that require knowledge of other disciplines, such as business administration, in addition to chemical knowledge, are conceivable. Possible fields of activity arise in the areas of quality assurance, human resources management or marketing.
