Competencies

Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

In this module, students learn and understand the basic concepts and methods of modern theoretical physics. They are able to apply these to problems in modern physics, solve problems independently and present their solutions in an understandable way. They learn to analyse axioms and their consequences, particularly in the field of quantum mechanics. Students also start to understand the difference between classical and modern theoretical physics.

Content of teaching

Quantum mechanics

  • Topic of quantum mechanics
  • General principles of quantum mechanics: Hilbert space, observables and uncertainty principle, measurements, interpretations
  • Schrödinger equation, time evolution operator, stationary Schrödinger equation
  • Time dependence of expected values, symmetries, conservation variables
  • Quantum mechanics in one space dimension: box potential
  • Local and momentum representation, probability interpretation
  • The harmonic oscillator
  • Quantum mechanics in three spatial dimensions
  • Motion in the centre potential, the orbital angular momentum
  • Hydrogen atom
  • Spin, coupling of angular momentum, spin-orbit coupling and further corrections of the hydrogen spectrum
  • Pauli principle, periodic table
  • Approximation methods, e.g. Ritz and WKB, perturbation theory
  • Further topics: Density matrix, EPR and Bell's inequalities, quantum computers

Study requirements

Allocated examiner Workload LP2
Teaching staff of the course Tutorial on Quantum mechanics (exercise)

Regular completion of the exercises (usually 50%), in each case with a recognisable and goal-oriented solution approach, as well as participation in the exercise groups (in particular: Presentation of own solutions or solution approaches, asking technical questions and critical discussion of the physical problems, working on attendance exercises).
The exercises to be worked on will be issued one week in advance. The lecturer determines the exact criteria at the beginning of the course and announces them.
