Systems biology is an innovative interdisciplinary research field that is continuously evolving. Its aim is to understand and map the dynamic processes in a cell, an organ or an organism. In the bilingual Master's program "Genome Based Systems Biology" exactly this approach is pursued. Due to the rapid progress regarding new high-throughput methods in biological and medical research, those interested in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics can collect extensive data. Its analysis and the linking of the individual levels pave the way for theoretical approaches and computer-based models that simulate biological processes.
At Bielefeld University students in this very broadly based course of study take a hands-on approach to data acquisition by learning a wide range of experimental methods in small groups and training in the operation of complex equipment. In addition, they deepen their basic biological knowledge and acquire the bioinformatic and mathematical skills that enable them to understand and analyze the complex data sets and to set up suitable models.
In the second year students decide for themselves, according to their interests, whether their focus is more on theoretical work on the computer or in the laboratory. There is also the possibility to complete projects and theses in cooperation with external academic institutions, research departments in hospitals and companies. When working on current research topics, students experience "good laboratory practice" and can also try their hand at project management. In this way they are ideally prepared for a subsequent doctorate and/or professional activities, for example in the fields of biotechnology, medicine, agriculture, pharmacy or bioinformatics.

Access requirements

Access to the Master programme is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters, qualifies for exercising a profession and is in accordance with the subject-specific regulations.

In any case, please read the specific Admission requirements for this Masters programme in the Subject-specific regulations (PDF).
Degrees from accredited Bachelor programmes at German ‘Berufsakademien’ are equivalent to Bachelor degrees from universities.

Applicants with a university degree obtained abroad are granted access provided that the degree they have acquired is deemed sufficient for this purpose and they can provide evidence of the required language skills.

Application, admission and enrolment  1

The study places for this degree programme are subject to local admission restrictions (numerus clausus). You need to apply within the currently applicable application deadlines.

As soon as you receive a positive response in the application and status portal (notice of access from the faculty) and receive your admission notice from the Student Office, you can submit your application for enrolment within the set deadline. If you are already enrolled at Bielefeld University, you need to apply for a change of degree programme. After the deadline expires, the study place will be allocated to someone else.

You can find more detailed information on the application process as well as information on the enrolment procedure on the pages of the Student Office.
