The integration of historical and art-historical questions, research perspectives, and methods constitutes the core of the master’s degree programme Images, Media, Materiality: Historical Perspectives. The programme responds to a widespread demand in both professional practice and academic research for the systematic combination of historical and art-historical expertise. The acquisition of these interdisciplinary competencies—essential for analytical and conceptual work in cultural institutions and related professional fields—is ensured through close collaboration between teaching staff from both disciplines in jointly designed and jointly taught courses.

The curriculum focuses on the fields of images, media, and materiality, examined in relation to historical processes of change. The programme’s objective is to provide students with a profound historical understanding of diverse cultural artefacts, taking into account both their modes of medial production and their historical impact. This focus is complemented and supported by sustained theoretical reflection, drawing on a strong tradition of theoretical discussions within the department.
