Practice-orientated training
The degree programme attaches great importance to practical experience. Within the framework of theory-in-practice courses and the support of the Teaching Experience Semester, students have the opportunity to apply and reflect on their theoretical knowledge directly in everyday teaching, which strengthens their professional competence.

Specialised didactic specialisation
The programme focuses on the didactic implementation of the content learnt in the Bachelor's phase. By setting individual specialisations, students are able to deepen their knowledge of topics such as values education or intercultural education according to the needs of their future pupils.

Interdisciplinary approaches
The degree programme promotes interdisciplinary networking, which allows students to integrate different academic perspectives. This supports the development of a broad and differentiated understanding of religion and its role in society.

Inclusion and diversity
A central concern of the degree programme is to raise awareness of inclusion and diversity in religious education. Students learn how to design lessons that are sensitive to plurality and diversity and that do justice to the different needs and backgrounds of their pupils.

Dedicated teaching and supervision
The study environment is characterised by close supervision and dedicated teaching. The proximity between teaching staff and students promotes an active learning culture in which individual questions and concerns can be addressed in a targeted manner.
Following their bachelor’s and master courses, as well as the preparatory service, teachers take on a varied, complex and socially responsible role. They shape teaching and learning processes, support and encourage pupils in their personal development, and empower them to shape their future as mature and responsible citizens. Career prospects are generally positive, as the demand for qualified teachers is set to continue into the future. Key factors influencing successful recruitment later on include the type of school chosen and the combination of subjects, regional demand, personal mobility and flexibility, as well as decisions and priorities in education policy. Assessments of recruitment prospects are available, for example, from the Ministry of Education of North Rhine-Westphalia.
When choosing subjects, it is also important to take your own interests into account so that you can later teach the subjects you are interested in with enthusiasm. Furthermore, considering the age of the pupils in the respective school types is helpful in making an informed decision.

Access to the Master of Education is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters and qualifies them a for profession. Whether the first degree provides suitable access also depends on the kind of teaching qualification to be pursued.

A first degree for a subsequent Master of Education programme with the professional goal of a teaching qualification is generally given if the Bachelor degree was completed at Bielefeld University (according to the Bachelor Examination Regulations (German ‘BPO’) for the 2011 study model) with a corresponding orientation (professional goal and choice of subjects).

Other degrees may be accepted if applicants can provide evidence of academic achievements for the intended teaching qualification that are substantially equivalent to those of the above-mentioned bachelor degree. For example, these can be degrees

  1. granting a teaching qualification for a different school type,
  2. with a different choice of subjects,
  3. with a subject-specific orientation (i.e. degrees that do not encompass a teaching qualification)
  4. a degree from another university.

Access to the Master of Education may be subject to the completion of alignment studies. The fulfilment of the access requirements is checked in each case during the application procedure.

The exact regulations for the access procedure can be found in the examination and study regulations for the Master programme (see navigation).

Access to the preparatory service (German ‘Referendariat’) requires knowledge of two foreign languages. This is usually provided via the German ‘Abitur’. The Bielefeld School of Education (BiSEd) counselling service will respond to further questions.

In order to obtain a teaching licence (German "Vocatio") for preparatory service (German 'Referendariat') for the subject of Protestant Theology, you must be a member of a Protestant church. More detailed information can be obtained from the Regional Church Office of the Protestant Church of Westphalia.
