Curriculum Vitae

Britta Wrede is head of the Medical Assistive Systems Group at Bielefeld University since 2019. Before that she headed the Applied Informatics Group at the Technical Faculty of Bielefeld University since 2010 and the Hybrid Society Group at the CoR-Lab. After receiving her M.A. and PhD title from the Faculty of Linguistics in 1999 and from the Technical Faculty in 2002 respectively, both in the area of automatic speech recognition, she became a DAAD fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley.

Her group is developing interactive systems that provide support for physical as well as cognitive activities, such as a robot sport coach, a language therapy assistant, or a companion for cognitive stimulation. The group also addresses interactions with smart homes and smart environments to support the execution as well as the learning of collaborative tasks.

Her research is driven by the goal of better understanding and modelling interaction processes between humans and technical systems. One important source of inspiration comes from parent-child interactions which provide ample evidence for (mutual) scaffolding behavior and the rapid integration of situational information. To address the complex issue of situated scaffolding her group investigates and develops approaches to attention and emotion modelling as well as situation analysis and applies them to context-sensitive multimodal dialog modelling and speech learning.

Britta Wrede is co-speaker of the Cluster for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) and member of the Research Institute for Cognition and Robotics (CoR-Lab). She is or has been Principal Investigator in several nationally and internationally funded projects such as the Forschungskolleg Gestaltung von flexiblen Arbeitswelten, CINEMENTAS (Cooperative IntellgeNcE MENTal models for Assistive Systems), the CRC 673 Alignment in Communication, the DAAD Thematic Network on Intelligent Systems, CODEFROR, ITALK, RobotDoc, Humavips, SoziRob, KogniHome and DESIRE projects.

Britta Wrede is co-editor of the German Journal of Artificial Intelligence (Künstliche Intelligenz).
