Die großen Möglichkeiten im Bereich Therapie und Biotechnologie lassen Stammzellen zu einem der aktuellsten Themen der Zellbiologie werden. Stammzellen sind in der Lage, sich selbst zu erneuern und in verschiedene Zelltypen zu differenzieren. Stammzellen kommen in den Reichen Planta und Animalia vor. Im Unterschied zu tierischen Stammzellen sind die der Pflanzen i.A. totipotent. Embryonale Stammzellen der Mammalia zeigen ebenfalls Totipotenz und lassen sich zur Regeneration ganzer Organismen verwenden. In verschieden Organen werden auch adulte multipotente Stammzellen gefunden, die Aufgaben der Regeneration erfüllen können. In diesem Mastermodul sollen die theoretischen Grundlagen der Stammzellbiologie anhand von aktuellen Publikationen erarbeitet werden. Im praktischen Teil werden Stammzellkulturen aus verschiedenen Quellen angelegt und ihre Vermehrung bzw. Differenzierung mit molekularbiologischen Methoden beobachtet. Weiterhin sollen Experimente zu genetischen Steuerung der Proliferation durchgeführt werden.
