Ein Großteil aller Organismen verfügt über eine innere Uhr, die biologische Prozesse mit dem Tag-Nacht-Rhythmus synchronisiert. Störungen der biologischen Uhr führt bei Menschen zu Unwohlsein, Übermüdung und in chronischen Fällen zu Depressionen, Übergewicht und Krebs. Ähnlich wie bei Menschen sind auch Pflanzen abhängig von einer funktionierenden biologischen Uhr. Störungen wirken sich auf alle wichtigen biologischen Prozesse aus, wie zum Beispiel die Photosynthese, Stärkeabbau, die Abwehr von Fraßfeinden, die Aufnahme von Mineralstoffen aus dem Boden und dem Zeitpunkt der Blüte. All diesen biologischen Phänomenen liegen regulatorische genetische Netzwerke zu Grunde. In diesem Forschungsmodul werden Studierende mithilfe molekularbiologischer Techniken wie Realtime PCR, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), Chromatinimmunpräzipitation und RNA-Immunpräzipitation individuelle Projekte bearbeiten, die sich an den am Lehrstuhl bearbeiteten Fragestellungen orientieren.
