The aim of this lecture-style course is to provide students with an overview of British history from the Anglo-Saxons into the 20th century. We will divide 1500 years into broad movements that are characterised by historically specific conflicts between its main political players – crown, nobility, church, merchants/industrialists, the people – and explore the political and ideological genesis of that strange animal, the parliamentary monarchy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
