230190 Karl der Große in der europäischen Literatur des Mittelalters (S) (WiSe 2020/2021)

In nahezu jedem Jahr wird in Aachen der Internationale Karlspreis verliehen, mit dem Persönlichkeiten geehrt werden, die sich um Europa und die Europäische Einigung verdient gemacht haben. Der Preis ist nach Karl dem Großen († 814) benannt, dem fränkischen König aus dem Frühmittelalter, mit dem die antike Kaiserwürde im westlichen Europa erneuert wurde. Wie kam es dazu, dass dieser historisch hoch umstrittene Herrscher zum ‚Vater Europas‘ avancierte, zum Garant des ‚guten alten Rechts‘, zum Schirmherrn des Christentums, zum Heiligen gar? Das Seminar untersucht kritisch die Rolle der Literatur beim Entstehen einer deutsch-französischen Projektionsfigur für die Werte des ‚christlichen Abendlands‘. Im Zentrum stehen dabei das altfranzösische und das mittelhochdeutsche ‚Rolandslied‘, Strickers ‚Karl‘, sowie Auszüge aus den spätmittelalterlichen Karlsdichtungen, bei denen die Teilnehmenden gern ihre eigene Sprachkompetenz (etwa im Niederländischen oder Norwegischen) einbringen können.
