Love is a major theme in Shakespeare's oeuvre. His Romeo and Juliet, to date, is known as one of the greatest love stories. In his sonnets the poet dedicated an entire lyric cycle to love. But love is even more than a major topic in Shakespeare, it has been one of the great concerns and driving forces of humanity. What did it mean to love in Shakespeare's time? Where there love conventions? Do his works present different kinds of love? The course wants to look at these and other questions and explore the manifold field of love by tracing it through Shakespeare's poetry, comedy, and tragedy.
