Waren die Medien zu Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts noch der Kanal, durch den eine Botschaft vom Sender zum Empfänger fließt, so werden sie zum Ende des Jahrhunderts nicht nur als Konstrukteure sozialer Praxen gesehen, sondern ihnen wird die Definitionsmacht über Realitäten und soziale Umwelten zugeschrieben. Ihren dualen Status als Kanal und als Text, als technisches Artefakt und als Medienbotschaft versuchen die unterschiedlichen Medientheorien zu fassen.
In der Vorlesung werden Medientheoretiker und ihre Idee vorgestellt z.B. Marshall McLuhan, der Entdecker der "Gutenberg-Galaxis" und der "magischen Kanäle", Neil Postman, der Medienökologe und Theoretiker des Infotainments oder Friedrich Kittler, ein Techniktheoretiker der Medien.
