250030 Post-socialist schooling: special educational needs and inclusive education in Estonia (BS) (WiSe 2019/2020)

Contents, comment

This block seminar will introduce students to today’s educational challenges and innovations in Estonia. Geographically situated between Finland and Russia, this post-socialist Baltic country undergoes important transformations, showing high achievements in PISA scores (OECD 2016) and new policies promoting equity in the education system. The seminar will further describe the system of support for children with special educational needs (SEN) in Estonia, with its institutions, legislation, and professionals (SEN Coordinators, SEN Assistants, etc.).
Differences between various geographical areas in Estonia on implementing inclusive education persist nonetheless, and the education of learners from Russian speaking groups connects with the global discussions on cultural and language diversity. The aging of school teachers and the education of new generations of student teachers bring new challenges for pedagogical and didactical strategies.
A final round table will bring contemporary perspectives on educational research in Estonia, with a specific view on the Estonian Schools and the research partnerships with other Nordic (e.g. Sweden or Finland) and Baltic (e.g. Latvia or Lithuania) countries.
