Contents, comment

Es ist nicht zuletzt die periphere Lage Irlands innerhalb Europas, die die Entstehung zahlreicher kultureller Besonderheiten im irischen Frühmittelalter ermöglichte. Die Adaption des Christentums im 5. Jahrhundert führte daher zu einer außergewöhnlichen Verschmelzung heidnischer Tradition mit dem neuen Glauben, die einzigartige kulturelle Produkte hervorbrachte, als Beispiel seien hier die Bußbücher angeführt. Fernab von Rom entwickelte sich ein Zentrum der Gelehrsamkeit, welches bis zu den Beutezügen durch die Wikinger eine Blütezeit erleben sollte.
Dieses Seminar geht der Frage nach, wie sich das Zusammenspiel heidnischer und christlicher Aspekte ergänzte, verdrängte und neue Formen bildete. Hierbei werden insbesondere Beispiele aus der Kultur-, Rechts-, und Religionsgeschichte behandelt.
